School Camps in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Take learning beyond the classroom and into the outback.

Give your students the opportunity to stay, learn and connect on a real working property in the heart of South Australia’s Flinders Ranges.

Set across 24,000 acres just 15 minutes from Hawker, Mount Little Station offers a very different kind of school camp. Students are able to step into station life, surrounded by rugged ranges, ancient landscapes, native wildlife, open space and some of the clearest night skies in Australia.

Hosted by an experienced educator

Your school camp is personally hosted by Kellie Zadow, a former teacher and school principal who understands the planning, communication and practical support teachers need when taking students away from school.

Mount Little Station welcomes upper primary, middle years and secondary school groups, giving schools the flexibility to create a camp experience that suits their students, curriculum focus and preferred activities.

Experience the Flinders Ranges

Mount Little Station provides a memorable base from which schools can experience the wider Flinders Ranges.

The surrounding region offers opportunities to explore remarkable geological formations, national parks, cultural sites, pastoral history, wildlife, regional communities and some of South Australia’s most significant visitor attractions.

Schools may choose to incorporate experiences such as:

  • Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park
    guided bushwalking and hiking
  • Blinman and the historic Blinman Mine
  • Wadna Cultural Centre
  • Arkaroo Rock
  • Nilpena Ediacara National Park, subject to availability
  • regional galleries and tourism attractions
  • wildlife observation and scenic stops

Mount Little can provide local knowledge and help connect schools with participating operators, while each school determines the activities and learning program best suited to its students.

Space for Students to Reconnect

One of the most powerful parts of a Mount Little school camp may be what is not there.

Away from constant screens, notifications and everyday routines, students have space to talk, share meals, sit around the fire, notice wildlife and experience genuine darkness and quiet.

For some students, it may be their first experience of the scale and stillness of the outback.

What Teachers Say

Mt Little hosted what was one of the best camps we have held in a long time!

From the outset, Kellie was easy to work with, informative and flexible around our booking needs. Once the kids got over the shock of no service at the dorms, they genuinely loved the fact that we sat around fires, played campfire games, cards and just chatted – a big moment for our 15 – 16 year olds! The dorm set up was great – comfy beds, warm showers and a great camp kitchen / fire pit area.

Another highlight was Pizza Night where we were welcomed into the friendly atmosphere of a great camp cook out & the pizzas were to die for!

When we stayed, there was no power at the dorms – so this is something to keep in mind when planning food, night-time activities and charging of phones – but it honestly wasn’t a hinderance to the experience. Kellie was very helpful with helping to store some of our perishables.

In all, I cannot recommend the people or facilities at Mt Little highly enough. While we didn’t engage in the farm animal activities, they are there for younger visitors, the walk to Mt Little Creek was great and it is conveniently located to many of the cool places in the Flinders.

“Restore balance. Most kids have technology, school and extracurricular activities covered. It’s time to add a pinch of adventure, a sprinkle of sunshine and a big handful of  outdoor play.“
