Sustainability at Mount Little Station

Living lightly on the land, with respect for what came before and care for what’s to come.

Caring for the land that sustains us

Mount Little Station is a 24,000 acre working sheep and cattle station, visitor destination and family home in the Flinders Ranges. Caring for the land is not a separate project. It is part of everyday station life.

Our approach to sustainability is practical and ongoing. We are working to protect the landscape, use water and energy thoughtfully, reduce waste, support our regional community and help visitors care for this special part of South Australia.

Looking after the land

Mount Little Station includes rugged ranges, native vegetation, dry creek beds and important habitat for local wildlife and birdlife.

Our land management practices include rotational grazing, feral animal control, revegetation and erosion management. Through the Ecosystem Management Understanding (EMU) project Mount Little fence more than 1,000 hectares of the property to support better land management and protect environmentally important areas.

Mount Little Station is also working with the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board through its Property Management Planning program. This involves assessing the condition of the property, identifying priorities and guiding future projects such as revegetation, habitat restoration, erosion management and wildlife corridors.

Our aim is to support biodiversity, strengthen the resilience of the landscape and allow pastoral production and tourism to coexist responsibly.

Using water wisely

Water is precious in the Flinders Ranges.
Mount Little relies on rainwater and underground water, so we ask guests to use it thoughtfully. Rainwater is used throughout our accommodation and guest facilities, but water is not available for filling caravan or camper tanks.
We encourage visitors to arrive prepared and help us protect the station’s limited water supply.

Solar energy and thoughtful design

Solar systems provide power across key accommodation, amenities and station infrastructure, including station bores.
Where possible, our accommodation makes use of natural ventilation and passive cooling. Outdoor lighting is also kept to a minimum, helping reduce energy use and protect the clear, dark skies that make nights at Mount Little so memorable.

Reducing waste and reusing resources

Recycling facilities are provided across the station, including crates for eligible cans and bottles at campsites. Food scraps can also be collected for the station chickens.
Existing buildings, yards and materials are repaired and reused wherever practical. Old windmill blades have even found a new life as campsite signs, reducing waste while preserving part of the station’s story.

Supporting local

Supporting local businesses and communities is an important part of responsible tourism.

Beef and lamb raised on Mount Little Station are used in meals served at the Mount Little Station Tavern. We also choose locally made and locally supplied food, products, merchandise and services wherever practical.

By staying, eating and shopping locally, our visitors help support families and small businesses throughout the Flinders Ranges.

Respect for Country

Mount Little Station is located on Adnyamathanha Country. We acknowledge the Adnyamathanha people as the Traditional Custodians of the Flinders Ranges and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
We recognise their enduring connection to Country and the importance of protecting the land, waterways, wildlife and cultural heritage of this region.
We do not tell Aboriginal cultural stories that are not ours to tell. We encourage visitors to seek out Aboriginal owned and guided experiences where these stories can be shared by the people who hold them.

Helping visitors understand the landscape

Our walking trails, station experiences, school camps and visitor information provide opportunities to learn about pastoral life, the natural environment and the realities of living and working in a remote region.

We hope visitors leave Mount Little with a greater appreciation of the Flinders Ranges and a stronger desire to care for the places they visit.

Welcoming all visitors

We want visitors to feel welcome, respected and comfortable at Mount Little Station.

Visitors with particular accessibility requirements are encouraged to contact us before booking so we can provide information about the accommodation, terrain and facilities and help them plan their stay.

  • Sorting recycling and general waste
  • Bringing reusable drink bottles and shopping bags
  • Staying on designated roads, tracks and walking trails
  • Leaving gates as you find them

A continuing journey

Sustainability is an ongoing commitment. We will continue improving the way we manage the land, water, energy, waste and visitor experiences as resources and opportunities allow.

Small, practical changes matter, particularly when they become part of how a place is cared for every day.
